Fight Free Radicals using the antioxidants in blueberries

Turns out the humble blueberry is good for more than sweetening up your morning cereal. Studies (4, 5) show blueberries may encourage cognitive clarity, fight cancer, and may even help in lowering cholesterol. The vitamins, anthocyanins and phenolics in blueberries can act as antioxidants, protecting the body against the damaging effects of free radicals.

Chamomile has long been regarded as a gentle, soothing botanical. Now, science is weighing in with some convincing findings: dosages given to babies have been shown to decrease crying and agitation (9). It may have special antibacterial and antiviral properties. Chamomile may even prove effective in treating attention deficit disorder (10).

Ever notice how green tea is enjoyed for its soothing effect, even though it contains caffeine? Researchers think that answer lies in something called L-theanine. It's a primary amino acid found in green tea that may inhibit the stimulatory effect of caffeine (6). Other remarkable psychoactive properties may include improvements in cognition and mood (6).

Lemon balm is a botanical valued for its reported ability to reduce stress. In fact, in self-rated, Bond-Lader mood scale ratings, lemon balm has been shown to significantly decrease levels of anxiety (8).

Ginkgo biloba isn't just fun to say - it's long been used as a medicinal in Asia. Now, clinical reviews are showing that ginkgo biloba may improve memory, reduce stress and improve aspects of cognitive health (11).

A close cousin to the more familiar blueberry, bilberries have proven effective in significantly improving memory (1, 2). Notoriously difficult to cultivate (the plants actually prefer nutrient-poor soil), bilberry pigment has been found to contain precious antioxidants, important for combating oxidative damage and free radicals (3).

Our scientists say vitamin A is a "lipid soluble, unsaturated hydrocarbon micronutrient." Thankfully, they also explain in plain English that vitamin A is important for immune function, bone formation, skin and eye health, and controlling oxidative status (12, 13).

B vitamins are water soluble and are necessary for enzymatic function relating to customary processes and energy metabolism within the cell, specifically in mitochondria (14).

This pair packs a potent punch. B12 is important for tissue and red blood cell generation (17-21). It plays a pivotal role in the synthesis of serotonin, which is important for maintaining a good mood (22). B-6 has been shown to play a role in preventing heart disease and lowering blood pressure (23, 24).

Niacin is a B3 vitamin, and it's important for energy supplies and metabolic function (15, 16). It may be useful in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides in the bloodstream.

Not only does zinc play an integral role in the free radical control through enzymes (superoxide dismutase SOD); but it serves to preserve proteins, antioxidants, and cellular structure as a non-enzyme associated antioxidant (25, 26). As you may know, excess free radicals can lead to aging and disease. Not only is zinc important as an antioxidant, but it may serve as an indirect anti-inflammatory (27, 28).

Magnesium is a mineral involved in hundreds of metabolic processes, from muscle contractions to membrane integrity and can be antagonistic of calcium related functions within the body (38). Magnesium supplementation may prove to be effective in improving sleep quality and circadian rhythms as well as reducing symptoms of depression (39, 40).

Vitamin C is a critically important antioxidant. It's is a potent scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and may serve to protect and/or delay the onset of DNA, lipid, or protein oxidation. It is hypothesized that the oxidation of DNA, lipids, and/or proteins lead to disease and aging (29). Serum vitamin C concentrations decline with age, thus it is recommended that the elderly supplement their diets with vitamin C (30).

Vitamin E can serve as a potent antioxidant, reducing lipid oxidation and inflammation occurrence (31). Low plasma levels of vitamin E are associated with age-related physical decline, thus adequate intake is important with aging (32).
